How did I get so successfull? To be honest with you, it was mostly trial and error. I found out hat works and what doesn’t. I succeeded and I failed miserably. I use wordpress for my blogs simply because it provides me with the best options for SEO tactics that I have found. There are thousands of usefull plugins available through thier plugin directory and thousands of great wordpress themes available. However, none of it matters without content being updated daily.

Once you have set your articles to post automatically at your specified date and time you can take a break while the blog updates itself automatically.

Some people outsource thier content and buy it from websites or post free articles from other websites. If you are going to do either of these you are better off spending the money and getting some origional content. Google loves origionality.

Step 2 to generating blog traffic is to promote your blog. You can have all of the best content on the internet… but if nobody knows… is it really there?

You can do this through several methods. However, I am only going to outline what I do.

My first method is through other blogs and website forums. If you use google blog search for your niche you are sure to find the top blogs for that topic. You will need to read those blogs and comment on them daily. Only chose the blogs that let you enter your website address. If they are “do follow” links it would be best… but you will not be able to know that. In addition, you should try to be one of the first 5 people to comment these articles.

Not only is the website owner going to check out your website, anyone who reads the comments will also do the sale. The trick is to leave a good comment.

As for forums, most forums let you enter your url into your profile and into your signature. Visit only the most polular forums and comment frequently in order to build up some trust and relationships. People will come to see you as an expert in the field over time. In addition, each time your signature appears, google will pick it up and come straight back to your website and crawl it.

Step 3 to generating website traffic is through social media traffic. I use a wordpress plugin called WordTwit. Every time I post an article on any of my websites it is automatically posted to my twitter account for that website. This will give you some insane traffic once you have some good followerss

A good way to get followers is by adding another wordpress plugin called WP FollowMe. This gives your blog a “follow me on twitter” badge that is always visible to your reader no matter how much scrolling they do.

another good traffic tip is to create a facebook fan page for your blog. This will generate some great traffic from people who actively use facebook and are interested in your topic. Facebook will even suggest that they join your fan page automatically. How great is that?

Finally, I reccomend that you sign up with aweber and create a double opt-in mail list. This will capture your one-time visitors and turn them into repeate visitors. It’s as cheap as $1 to join them and it is so simple to use. I would say that 70% of my income comes from my lsit. It is my “atm machine”. If you don’t have a list, get one now. However, don’tbuy a premade list… that would be contributing to spam. you need to build one on your own.

The Adsense Truth

I remember when adsense was a highly valued source of revenue for many website owners. It used to me such a lucrative business to make a website based on a specific keyword, promote that site, and watch the clicks roll in.

In fact, some sites used to be able to generate as much as $50 a single click if you chose the right topic. Subjects such as mesotheolioma, credit card debt, loans, and even sales advice were the “best keywords” to use. However, these special keyword lists are drying up due to a flood of poor quality websites…

I have to admin, I was a big part of that downfall. I made a rather large fortune building cookie cutter website templates back in 2005 and sold them on google for up to $90 each… and I sold hundreads of each one.

That was then and this is now. It isn’t so simple any longer, and if people try to sell you a course on how to get rich quick from adsense it is a false hope. Those people are making money selling the course, not using adsense.

There are people such as John Chow and Shoemoney who are some of the internets most successful internet marketers… and they dont use adsense for the most part.

Take John Chow for instance. This is a person who makes over $500,000 a year on his personal blog. John does not use adsense. He has opted for promoting affiliate programs and direct advertising for his blog.

Now, I am not saying that you should drop adsense like a hot potatoe. There are still some good micri-niches out there to be had. I am simply saying that google AdSense is past it’s prime and some of the internets most successful bloggers are opting out from it.

Here is a good case study for you to examine. I run another niche website called Kpop-Jpop.com. This site is about Korean and Japanese pop music. This is a target that has a lot of searches, and little quality content. I make pretty good money from this website through various means. Adsense is on the site, and it is far from my best revenue generating advertising stream.

I make far more koney by selling my ads directly to my market, through my aweber double opt-in list and through an affiliate program with YesAsia/YesStyle. With these affiliate programs I make enough to pay all of my bills and have a large chunk left over to save for a rainy day, a nice vacation, or a Fendi Bag for my wife.

why am I still using adsense on these sites? Because I haven’t got around to changing ot for something better. They still generate some money… so I am not in a rush… since I am still doing quite well with it.I just remember when it was something special.

Now Google Adsense is lacking…

The fact of the matter is that everythign you do in life is somehow related to a sale. Do you take the bus or do you drive your car? Did the transit company just sell you on the benefits of taking public transit over the costs of taking a car and paying for parking? Did the want ad sell you on applying for the job? Did you convice the custoemr why they should make the purchase, or did they convince you why they shouldn’t make the purchase?

Everything in life is a sale, and life is in a constant state of change, and so too must sales. In fact, there have been many successful salespeople in the past that don’t change with the times to succeed. They failed to have a fluidity to them that is needed to thrive in a sales carer.

many sales people are a “one shot wonder” in thier field. This means that they get comfortable selling one type of product or service, and they forget to capitalize on everything else that is available to them.

For example, my background is IT sales. When I sold t one of my accounts I wouldn’t jsut focus on sellign the desktop computers. I would also focus on what software would be installed onto those computers, wat server were these computers being plugged into, warranty for those computers, installation, printers, toner, and even the printer cable that has not come with a pritner since 1994.

A salesperson needs take heed not to fall into the comfortability trap. It is this glass ceiling that prevents a good salesperson from becoming a great salesperson.

If you are going to remain a sales superstar, you need to think outside of your box and expand all possibilites that are open to you… and make a ton of money whle you are at it.

Isn’t that why you are in this profession? Now go sell something!

However, we do have an advantage! The fact that everyone is holding onto thier cash simply means that everyone is looking for a deal. This is whay we need to focus more on Sale Selling. The simple fact of this is that you need to bring people to your specific product or service through promotions and advertising.

More importantly, you need something to grab the customer’s attention long enough for you to have a chance to use your Sales pitch.

A way that you can bring in customers is focus on relationship selling instead of simply offering the best price. You can talk about how long you have been in business or how many satisfied customers you have. Perhaps you use your advertisement to thank all of your existing happy customers for thier years of support they they have given you.

The benefit of doing this is that not only will your current customers feel obligated to return, your new customers will have some curiosity towards your business. They will wonder why you are so successful and will want to come see for themselves.

Sometimes it isn’t always about the price, sometimes it is about the service. I have won large deals even though I was well overpriced compared to the competition. The difference was that I leveraged my relationship with my new and existing customers to get the job done.

You should give it a try and see what happens. You may just get a new customer.

So go get some!

For example, if you walk into a car dealership and a salesperson asks you “is there anything that you are looking for your first answer will be “I’m just looking”. Asking your customer “is there anything for me today” will give you the same type of response, perhaps not in the same words.

I recommend picking out a product and calling your customer about that. I would use an approach that goes something along these lines using toner as an example. This should help improve your selling customer experience.

You: Hello “Mr. Customer”, I just on the phone with my manager and was just informed about this fantastic deal%u2026 so I immediately thought of you.

Customer: So, what is the deal?

You: I have been given the approval to sell toner at cost + 2% for today only.

Customer: That does sound like a deal.

You: Absolutely, how many do you need?

The benefits to this type of approach are pretty clear.

1. It peaks the customer’s interest. Curiosity killed the cat (so to speak).

2. Customer does not know what the cost is, so it can be whatever you say it is. The fact that you say “cost + 2%” gives the deal some added weight.

3. The customer confirms that it is a deal.

4. You ask him for a quantity instead of asking him if he wants any. The question “how many do you need” needs a response that is not a yes/no answer.

This will generate some fantastic results of you do it properly. Once you ask the closing question, you need to stay quiet. Whoever speaks first will lose…

I chose toner as my example because every business in the world will print something at some point during the day. That being said, every business will need to order at least 1 toner during the month. If you only focused on selling toner to your top 200 account list and generated $100 worth of orders from each customer a month, you would have $240K worth of revenue a year.

Now what if they had color printers, more than 1 printer, or need other printer related items? You can easily have 4-5 times that amount of revenue. Now, what if they needed computers, servers, notebooks, and so on…

All it takes for sales success is 1 simple phone call about a toner. Every business is buying toner every month. If they are not buying it from you%u2026 they ARE buying it from SOMEONE ELSE.

So go get some toner business

Success comes and success goes… it is a fact of life that the sales game is full of peaks and valleys and as a salesperson you learn to adjust. The way that I adjusted was to focus on making myself irreplaceable instead of the guy with a good price.

Once you give yourself a value to your customer it makes it harder for the customer to walk away from you… even if you make a mistake. The key to building this value is through building great relationships with your clients. That is the reason why we focus on the “relationship sales model” at Tiger Direct B2B… it works. A company/customer relationship is FUNDIMENTAL to the success of any company.

As an account manager you are as close to owning your own business as possible without actually owning your own business. Your success is highly dependent on getting your name into the field and building a loyal base of customers. An important part of your success is building the relationship with your customer in order to promote repeat business.

Here are some things that you can focus on in order to help build a better relationship with your customer:

Try telling a joke (keep it clean).

Try reading their horoscope (I used to use this one. It works to break the ice).

Ask about their weekend.

Talk about something funny that was on the news.

Send them a birthday card. (They will remember this one for a long time).

The important part is to focus the relationship around them. Get your customer to smile when they speak with you (you can hear a smile over the phone). Once that emotion of happiness is associated with you it will be much easier for your customer to buy from you.

A great example of this is the new Windows 7 advertisement from Microsoft. In this add it shows a little girl on her father’s computer talking about how there are so many “happy words” on his computer. Once you get to look at the computer screen you can see her point out all of the “Windows 7” phrases and she keeps calling them “happy”. You see Microsoft see’s the value of emotion based purchasing as they are trying to infuse happiness with Windows 7 (you will be happy if you use Windows 7).

Your true value is that your customer will be happy if they buy from you instead of buying from other salespeople at other companies. Quite often these relationships are genuine. That is the beauty of relationship sales. It often works out with better results than you expect and your income will be far more stable and rewarding than those agents who are a quick “flash in the pan”.

 Isn’t that a good thing?

Up here in the true north I have had the experience of working with many different account managers during the past. There are some that stick out in my mind because they had the technical knowledge, they had the sales abilities… and yet they couldn’t survive among the agents with less knowledge or experience. The problem that these agents had is not limited to a select few agents because I hear it happening all of the time.

Here is a likely scenario: The sales agent gives the pitch and goes through the sales cycle. The customer starts to talk about their needs and the sales agent cuts off the customer and continues with the sales cycle. The customer does not get their questions answered; the sale does not take place.

This is a common problem that many salespeople have… mostly when selling products or services over the phone. You need to remember that the “sale” is not about “you”, it is about your customer. They are the one who is spending the money… shouldn’t they get to state their wants and needs?

An easy way to avoid this pitfall is to ask questions (and let the customer answer). Once the customer gives their answer you can then reiterate their answer back to them as a confirmation. This is called active listening. By repeating their answer to them (in different wording) it shows the customer that you were in fact paying attention to them. Don’t do this for every answer because you do not want to overdo it and sound like a used car salesman.

You need to keep in mind that silence lets the customer think about what you have just said and give you an answer. In fact, it will almost force them to answer you because sometimes the silence can get uncomfortable… and this works wonders when using a “sales close”.

For example: Your customer wants to buy some monitors. You go over the features and benefits and your customer understands them. Your next question should be “and will that be on PO or credit card”? Then keep quiet because if you speak first you lose. If the customer says either PO or the type of credit card they will be using you should immediately ask for the PO number or the credit card number because the sale has just been made. If they respond with anything else there is something that is preventing them from making the purchase and you need to ask more questions to find out what that is. Tie up those lose ends and try a different close…

Remember: Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing at all!

Although your voice is a part of your complete image that you present about you and your company, it is also one of the most overlooked tools that have at your disposal. If your voice is weak due to lack of sleep or energy, poor enunciation, laziness, clarity, or abrasive it will have a negative impact on your customer’s overall view of you. If you sound either tired or negative over the phone it will essentially kill your client’s mood and that is the easiest way to walk yourself right out of a sale. Here are some ways in which you can learn to develop your voice into a strong force that is impossible to resist.

Record your voice during a conversation that you are having with someone. This doesn’t have to be at work because if you sound dull over the phone at work there is a good chance that you will sound the same any other time that you are on the phone. You need to know that people will turn away from a voice that is irritating or harsh, too loud or soft, fades away, or always ends on a high note as if every sentence that you speak sounds like a question ( this last one really annoys me).

Play the recording back for yourself and mark down each time that you find yourself making a mistake. If you find that you have a long list of mistakes you need to work on your voice. It is then best to practice your conversation and presentation skills until you find that you make little to know mistakes.

More often than not, salespeople speak with a monotone voice throughout a sales call and that can cause your prospect to end the call rather quickly. You need to try to add some changed in tone and pitch while you are speaking in order to keep the prospect attentive throughout the conversation.

Another important point to remember is enunciation. If the customer does not understand what you are trying to say you will lose the sale every time. Speak clearly and emphasize certain key words that you want to get across. Words such as , direct, quality, popular, remarkable, strong, tremendous, immediately, exclusive, attractive, sensational, tested, you, and special all tend to be some powerful words that will pull your prospect back into the conversation.

Your posture can change your voice dramatically. During my time as a sales agent and now a sales manager I have seen many people slouch down and hunch over their keyboards like a caveman using a computer. This is the worst thing that you can do as it will sap all of the strength from your voice. For a long time Greg Tufts (another sales manager in Canada) did not sit while he was talking to a prospect as it gave his voice the appearance of confidence that was needed. You should try this as it works extremely well.

Finally, you must remember to smile. The customer can hear it and will end up smiling in return. However you need to be able to mirror your customer. If they just told you that their dog died you should not smile into the phone and speak with enthusiasm. This will only upset them… so please remember to use your common sense…

Everyone in sales has their own views on this topic and I am not speaking for everyone when I write this bog post. I am speaking from my own experiences as a successful account manager turned sales manager. I know that cold calling is a tough business model and some people find it too difficult and sometimes stressful. However, the pros from cold calling far outweighs the cons when you take a look at why cold calling is a much better method than other business models within a B2B environment.

1:            Cold calling is never passive, it is always active. I can’t stress this fact enough because being active makes things happen at a pace that you can control. You are the person who pays your bills and you need to set things in motion for you to be able to sustain your lifestyle. They say that fortune favours the bold and with cold calling this is very true.

2:            You never know what is around the corner with cold calling. Any existing account has only so much unlocked potential… but a new account can offer a hidden treasure of untapped revenue. The key to this is to get into the account and then spread your wings. Find every key contact that you need to in order to fully prospect that account.

3:            People favour the bold. In my opinion nothing is bolder than a cold call and the more cold calls that you do, the bolder you will become. It is a numbers game… the more cold calls that you do, the better you will get at it, which enables you to do more cold calls in return. This will do wonders with your self confidence and will improve other areas of your life in turn.

4:            Cold calling makes everything else a cake walk. Imagine that you spent the day lifting 50lb boxes around the office. Now imagine spending the next day lifting 5lb boxes. Those 5lb boxes will feel light as a feather because you had become accustomed to handling something much more difficult. This is also true with cold calling. Once you get used to converting cold calls to customers it makes it so much easier to get a warm lead to make their purchase.

5:            Self Respect is built over time. Do you know the feeling that you get once you have accomplished something worthwhile? People often get this feeling when they create something from nothing. This is what the most creative people do… the key difference is that your end result is measured in by company revenue and personal income.

Remember:        When you convert a cold call into a paying customer… you did it yourself, nobody did it for you. Take pride in what you do as it is just as important as any other job. Sales make the world’s economy flow. Absolutely nothing happens in the world until someone sells something… and that something usually starts with a cold call.

Fact: A sales pitch is your results in your first impression upon the customer and can say a lot about who you are as a salesperson.

Myth: A sales pitch is a scripted statement that you give to all of your customers in hopes that it will trigger a sale.

A sales script is far different from a sales pitch as it gives the customer a feeling of redundancy and makes you sound like a robot. A sales pitch is a feeling of excitement that you generate through your greeting that you can change on the fly to suite your clients needs at any given time.

Nothing is more important to prospecting (other than actually doing it) than the quality of your pitch.

Over the phone, windows of attention are typically slammed shut in less than 10 seconds. This means you have to maximize the impact of every word, syllable and pause in your lead off statements. They need to be works of art – compelling to the extreme degree. To minimize the importance of preparing a solid opening statement is to potentially short circuit your entire sales effort.

Fortunately, opening statements can be prepared and practiced before a sales opportunity is ever happens.

A great sales pitch can be the difference between having the customer call you back or having the customer call someone else back. You should work to develop a great sales pitch and practice it every day to the point it is a part of you. Try it out with a coworker with a bit of sales role play. You may feel silly at first… but this is one of the best ways to practice your pitch until you are comfortable with it.

A powerful, compelling, and practiced opening statement can launch many sales opportunities for you where a competitor’s lack of preparation can leave them standing still.

Remember: Your sales pitch should grab the attention of your client within the first 10 seconds. You need to sell yourself before you can sell your service. If they haven’t bought into the idea of dealing with you, they will never buy your product… even if your price is better. They will always respond to great service first.

It’s How You Handle It

Author’s note: After interviewing and working with hundreds of salespeople, and people considering the field of sales, they say their #1 fear is the fear of rejection. They’ve told me this is either the reason they never got into sales to begin with, or why they wanted to get out of it at the first opportunity. This article on the subject focuses on this problem 85% of salespeople suffer from, discusses why the problem needs to be solved, and gives three solutions, you may or may not agree with. Two of the three work. Ironically, it’s the one that doesn’t that’s championed by managers and scorned by their salespeople. This information is based upon frank discussions I’ve had privately with these people I’ve interviewed for the past 30 years. (The problem never goes away.) It was the result of these discussions and years of research that contributed to me creating and offering the third, proven, solution.

Question: what’s the problem with the fear of rejection? Answer: it stops you from doing what needs to be done.

What needs to be done? Find new customers. Increase sales. Specifically, the process of doing what it takes to find new customers and increase sales. If you can’t do the process, should you even be in sales?

Take a seat the sales manager commands. Why aren’t you making your cold calls? No more excuses. Do it. Returning to your desk, your hand hovers above the receiver. It shakes. You keep trying to clear the cobwebs out of your throat but you can’t. Your mouth is as dry as sawdust. Your lips silently rehearse the script one more time. Receiver’s in hand. Hesitation. Punch the first three digits. Stall. Receiver’s down. You can’t do it. (Only 5% of salespeople spend at least 30 minutes a day cold calling.) Fear of rejection stops you from doing what needs to be done.

You’re excited to get the referral. You’ll call her when you get back to the office. Promise. You will this time. Really. Back at your desk you’re interrupted. Customer problem. Take care of it. Service stops by. Quick question. Answered. Billing calls. Problem with your best account. Resolved. Day’s done. Never got around to calling that lead. Tomorrow you will. For sure.

Arriving at the office late because of early appointments, you have colored post-it-calls-to-return decorating your monitor like a Christmas tree gone berserk. Emails to compose. Paperwork that needs one last look. Done. Make the call. Why? She probably doesn’t need it. Probably not qualified. Probably too expensive for her. Probably won’t take my call. Forget it. Probably not a good lead anyway. (Over 50% of referred leads are never contacted.) Fear of rejection takes many forms. Fear of rejection stops you from doing what needs to be done.

The manufacturer’s rep introduces an exciting new product at your sales meeting. All your customers will be interested he says. He does the entire FAB thing: features, advantages, benefits. The sales manager smiles and silently computes her bonus from the new sales. But her dream is not yours. You have more pressing things to do. Calls turning into emergencies, reports to research, proposals to finalize. Maybe tomorrow. Tomorrow. Tomorrow. The week’s done. The product sits on the shelf like the best kept NSA secret.

Why didn’t you call? Well…it’s been several months since you last spoke with each customer. They probably won’t remember you. How embarrassing is that? Maybe they’re unhappy with the last product they bought from you. Otherwise they’d have called with another order wouldn’t they? Better let sleeping dogs lie. Like most salespeople you have time to keep in contact with only your very best customers. Sure all your customers could use the new product but you never call. Come to think of it, you don’t even tell your best customers. (The majority of salespeople are too embarrassed to cross-sell. They feel it’s unprofessional or they’re being too pushy.) Your customers will hear about the new product from your competitors before you’ll ever get roundtuit. Fear of rejection forces you to wave the white flag again. Fear of rejection stops you from doing what needs to be done.

You’ve been invited to a networking function. Can’t get out of it. You hate socializing and small talk. How boring. You’d rather stick pins into the tips of your toes. But go you must. It’s not an option. Spotting another co-worker you isolate yourself for the evening. Safety. Comfort. How about that game last night? Naw, he’ll never be re-elected. Wonder what kind of shotgun he was using for that quail? What do you think of the new guy in sales? You sneak out early. What a waste of time you tell yourself as you creep along in the stalled traffic on the Interstate. (Over 90% of people are uncomfortable networking. 80% of the top salespeople are.) Fear of rejection in the form of a networking ghost haunts you like a Stephen King horror. It seems to always be hiding behind the next door. Fear of rejection stops you from doing what needs to be done.

Selling is a process
Managers are the strategists, they set the goals: find new customers and increase the sales. Salespeople are the tacticians. They make it happen. They perform the process of finding new customers and increasing sales.

Step Two: Talking to your customer is an important process in qualifying them as a valuable client. What is their Budget? What is their buying cycle? Are they currently under contract with another supplier? Who makes the buying decisions? Properly qualifying your customer will make it easier for you to position your product to them… in fact it will even help you decide if you should focus on them at all.

Step Three:Prospect by referrals! Word of mouth advertising is worth more than gold these days. Chances are you once had some work done on your car or house at some point and were so please with the result that you passed that persons information on to a friend or co-worker. The same can be done for you! The important thing to remember is that you need to surprise them with a level of service that they are not accustomed to in order for them to spread the word about you.

Step Four:Set up a schedule and follow it. Set aside a portion of your day for prospecting, a portion for admin and follow up work, and another portion of your day for building a prospecting list for the next day. After two-weeks of this routine you will stick to it out of habit. Keep this up for at least 6 months and see the results!

Step Five: Stick with what works best for you. Once you have a set method that delivers proven results it is best to keep going down the same path. Do not reinvent the wheel. Do not fix it if it isn’t broken. Once you find a system that works… use it!

Step Six:Set goals for yourself. What do you want? How much do you want to earn this year? How much do you want to earn next year? How many new accounts do you want to add this month? You need to remember that if you do not have a set target in mind you are fighting an uphill battle.

Step Seven:Qualify your customer! Chances are there is more than one opportunity that your customer can give you. Take the I.T. industry for example. Let’s say you just sold the customer 50 desktop computers. What about the servers that they may need to upgrade? What about the network cabling? What about the monitors? What about the software? What about the printers? What about the toner for those printers? What about the …? Remember, every sale leads to another and you must qualify the sale to ensure that you are offering the big picture.

Step Eight:Develop your prospects. Having a prospect is worthless unless you convert them into a customer. You will need to follow up with them on a regular basis in order to stay in the forefront of their mind. This step is crucial. Remember, there are countless other sales people just like you that prospect the same leads that you do on a daily basis. What makes you stand out from the crowd? If you do not keep in touch with your prospect you can be sure that someone else is… and that person does not pay your bills.

Step Nine: Consistency is important. No matter how bogged down with admin work you are, you must always make time to prospect for new leads. If you never prospect you will just maintain your current income… or even reduce your income. IF you want to grow you must make time to grow.

Step Ten: Maintain a database. You can’t expect to remember everything about all of your clients… all of the time. Using CRM software will allow you to keep track of all of the information that you have collected about your customers and prospects. Without good CRM software all other steps are null and void…
